How to get rid of an old fridge or freezer in Brussels

An old fridge or freezer is heavy, awkward and — unlike most junk — legally special. The cooling circuit contains refrigerant gases (and older units, gases that harm the ozone layer), so fridges and freezers must go to registered electrical (WEEE) recycling where those gases are safely extracted. Putting one out with the rubbish is both illegal and bad for the environment. Here are your options in Brussels.

Take it back when you buy a new one

If you are replacing the appliance, the retailer is usually obliged to take the old one back (one-for-one) when they deliver the new one. It is worth asking — it is free. The downside is timing: it only works if you are buying new, and only on the delivery day.

Recycling park (Recypark)

Recypark sites accept fridges and freezers as WEEE, generally free for households. But you have to transport it yourself — which means a van, not a car — and manoeuvre a heavy, tall appliance in and out on your own. Fine if you have the transport and help; hard otherwise.

Same-day pickup, disconnected and recycled

The simplest way is to have it collected. We disconnect the appliance, wheel it out from the kitchen or cellar, carry it down from any floor, and deliver it to registered WEEE recycling — with a note for landlords or businesses that need one.
