A house clearance checklist for Brussels
Clearing a whole home is daunting until it is broken into steps. Here is the checklist we give our own customers, tuned to Brussels — the stairs, the streets, the recycling and the paperwork.
Whether you are selling, moving, re-letting or clearing a relative's home, a full house clearance goes far more smoothly with a plan. Work through the stages below in order and the day itself becomes simple. If you would rather hand over the exhausting part, that is exactly what our house clearance service is for.
Four weeks before
- Walk every room, the attic, the cellar, the garage and the garden, and get a feel for the volume — it is always more than it looks.
- Decide the three piles: keep, pass on (sell, gift, donate) and clear.
- Book your clearance date. Around month-ends and moving season, good slots go quickly — send us photos early for a fixed price and a held date.
- For a rented property, re-read the lease and note the état des lieux requirements so you know the standard to hand back.
Two weeks before
- Set aside anything personal and important: documents, passports, photographs, jewellery, keys and warranties. On an estate clearance we will also flag these if we find them, but gather what you can first.
- List the sell/donate items and start moving them on. Usable furniture we can route to reuse on the day if you point it out.
- Empty and defrost fridges and freezers so they can be taken cleanly — see appliance removal.
- Sort the garden and shed if the weather allows; garden waste is heavy and best cleared with the house — see garden waste removal.
The week of
- Confirm access: which floor, is there a lift, and can the van stop at the door? On tight streets we book a legal loading spot — just tell us the address.
- Group the "clear" items where you can and flatten empty boxes to save space and cost.
- Take final meter readings (gas, water, electricity) and note them for the notary or the new occupant.
- Set aside the keys you need to hand back and label anything the next person will need.
Clearance day
- Let us in, point at what goes, and step back — we do all the lifting, from any floor.
- Keep the "keep" pile in one clearly marked room so nothing leaves by mistake.
- We sort as we load — reuse, WEEE, wood, metal, green waste and general — and sweep through before we leave. See what we take.
- Do a final walk-through together, then hand back the keys with a clear conscience.
