Bulky waste collection in Brussels: how it works
Brussels has a regional bulky-waste service for the big items that don't fit in a bag. It's cheap, but slow and limited. Here's how it works — and when a pickup is the better call.
Bulky waste — encombrants in French, grofvuil in Dutch — is anything too big for your normal rubbish bags: old furniture, mattresses, a broken cupboard, a rolled-up carpet. In the Brussels-Capital Region there is a public service that will collect a limited amount from your door, and there are recycling parks you can take it to yourself. Here is how it works, and the trade-offs.
The regional door-to-door collection
The regional cleaning agency (Bruxelles-Propreté / Net Brussel) offers households a bulky-waste collection, with a free allowance of a few cubic metres per year and a modest charge above that. You book a slot, then put the items out on the pavement at the agreed time. It is the cheapest route for a small amount — but you usually wait days or weeks for a date, you have to carry everything down to the kerb yourself, and there are strict limits on volume and item types.
The recycling parks (Recypark)
If you have a van or a big car, you can take bulky items to a Recypark yourself. Households get a free allowance; you load, transport and unload it. Good for a couple of items if you have transport and time; impractical for a flat's worth from a fourth floor with no lift.
When a pickup makes more sense
The public service is great for one or two items if you can wait and can carry them down. But if you need it gone quickly, have a lot, or can't face hauling a wardrobe down three flights, a pickup is worth it. We come to the item on any floor, do all the carrying, and take everything to reuse and recycling in one visit — no waiting for a slot and no kerb-side lifting. Either way, it gets recycled
Whichever route you choose, bulky waste in Brussels is meant to be sorted and recycled, not landfilled. When we collect, usable furniture goes to reuse charities such as the Kringwinkel and Les Petits Riens, and the rest is separated for recycling.
