How to dispose of an old mattress in Brussels
A mattress is one of the most awkward things to get rid of: too big for the bin, banned from normal rubbish, and impossible to fit in a car. Here are your real options in Brussels — and the fastest one.
Old mattresses cannot go in with household rubbish, they take up half a room, and they are heavy and floppy to carry down stairs. In Brussels you have three main ways to get rid of one — do it yourself at a recycling park, wait for a bulky-waste collection, or have it picked up. Here is how each works, with the pros and cons.
Option 1 — the recycling park (Recypark)
The regional Recypark sites accept mattresses for recycling, usually free for households in limited quantities. The catch: you need a car big enough to fit a folded mattress, you have to load and carry it yourself, and the parks have opening hours and sometimes queues. If you have transport and the muscle, it is the cheapest route.
Option 2 — bulky-waste collection
You can book a bulky-waste (encombrants / grofvuil) collection through the regional service, and a mattress qualifies. It is low-cost, but you often wait days or weeks for a slot, you have to carry the mattress down to the kerb yourself at the right time, and there are limits on volume. Option 3 — a same-day pickup
The easiest option is to have it collected from wherever it is. We come to the bedroom — fourth floor, no lift, whatever it takes — carry the mattress out for you, and take it to dedicated mattress recycling. What happens to a recycled mattress?
A mattress is mostly foam, textiles, steel springs and wood — all recyclable when separated. Taken to a proper mattress-recycling stream, those materials are recovered rather than landfilled.
